Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a fun musical fantasy film from 2005. It was directed by Tim Burton and written by John August. The movie is based on the famous 1964 book by Roald Dahl with the same name.
The film stars Johnny Depp as the quirky chocolate maker Willy Wonka. Freddie Highmore plays the kind-hearted boy, Charlie Bucket. Other stars include David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, and Christopher Lee. The story is about Charlie and four other kids who win a special contest. They get to tour Willy Wonka's amazing chocolate factory!
This movie is the second time Roald Dahl's book was made into a film. The first one was Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971. Warner Bros. started planning this new version in 1991. They gave Roald Dahl's family full control over the movie's creative choices. Many famous directors and actors were thought of for the film before Tim Burton and Johnny Depp joined.
Tim Burton often works with Johnny Depp and music composer Danny Elfman. This movie was special because Elfman wrote songs and sang in the score for the first time since The Nightmare Before Christmas. Filming happened in the United Kingdom from June to December 2004. When Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came out, people really liked it. It was a huge success, earning $475 million around the world!

What Happens in the Story?
Charlie Bucket and his family are very poor. They live close to the huge Wonka Factory. The factory's owner, Willy Wonka, had closed it for a long time. This was because other candy makers were trying to steal his secret recipes. He had to let go of all his workers, including Charlie's Grandpa Joe.
One day, Wonka reopens his factory! He announces a big contest. Five special Golden Tickets are hidden inside Wonka Bars all over the world. The lucky winners will get a full tour of his amazing factory. They will also get a lifetime supply of chocolate! Plus, one winner will get an extra special prize at the end.
Everyone starts buying Wonka Bars, and sales go way up! The first four tickets are found quickly. They go to Augustus Gloop, who loves to eat. Then there's Veruca Salt, a very spoiled girl. Next is Violet Beauregarde, who is very proud and competitive. Finally, there's Mike Teavee, who is always grumpy and loves TV.
Charlie tries twice to find a ticket, but he doesn't get lucky. He then hears that the last ticket was found far away. But then, Charlie finds some money and buys one more Wonka Bar. Just as it's revealed the other ticket was fake, Charlie finds the real Golden Ticket! People offer him money for it, but a kind cashier tells him to keep it. Charlie runs home, excited.
At home, Charlie thinks about selling the ticket to help his family. But his Grandpa George tells him to keep it. So, Charlie decides to go on the tour and takes Grandpa Joe with him.
Wonka greets Charlie and the other winners outside the factory. He then leads them into the magical place. Inside, the other four children can't resist temptation. Their bad habits cause them to be removed from the tour one by one. After each child leaves, Wonka's tiny workers, the Oompa-Loompas, sing a fun song about what went wrong.
During the tour, Wonka remembers his own difficult childhood. His father, Wilbur, was a strict dentist. He didn't let Wonka eat candy because it was bad for teeth. But Wonka secretly tried a piece of candy and loved it! He decided to follow his dreams and ran away from home. When he came back later, his father and their house were gone.
After the tour, the four children who were eliminated leave the factory. They each have a funny change related to how they were eliminated. Charlie learns that Wonka is getting older and wants to find someone to take over his factory. Since Charlie was the "least rotten" of the five, Wonka invites him to live and work there. But Charlie would have to leave his family. Charlie says no, because his family is the most important thing to him.
Wonka becomes sad, and his company starts to do badly. He eventually asks Charlie for advice. Charlie helps Wonka meet his father again. During their reunion, Wonka realizes how important family is. His father, Wilbur, finally accepts Wonka for who he is. After this, Wonka lets Charlie and his whole family move into the factory together.
