Chashi Nazrul Islam (born October 11, 1941 – died January 11, 2015) was a very well-known film director and producer from Bangladesh. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Director two times. He received these awards for his films Shuvoda in 1986 and Hangor Nodi Grenade in 1997. In 2004, the Government of Bangladesh honored him with the Ekushey Padak, which is a very important award for his contributions.

Early Life and Start in Films
Chashi Nazrul Islam was born on October 23, 1941, in a village called Shomoshpur in Munshiganj District. His parents were Mosleh Uddin Khan and Shayesta Khanom. He was the oldest of seven children, having four brothers and three sisters. His father worked in Jamshedpur, India.
When Nazrul Islam was 16, his father passed away. He then got a job at his uncle's office. His uncle was the auditor general of Pakistan at that time. Nazrul Islam was also part of a theater group called Krishti Sangha. After losing his job, he started working on radio programs in 1965.
Becoming a Film Director
Nazrul Islam's brother-in-law, Syed Awal, helped him get into the film industry. Syed Awal was the main assistant to director Fateh Lohani. Nazrul Islam first had a small acting role in a film called Asiya in 1961.
His big break came when he became an assistant director for Obaidul Huq on the film Dui Diganto in 1964. At the same time, he also directed and voiced radio dramas. Some of these were Ramer Sumoti, Socrates, and Sakhina Birangana.
In 2006, he directed the film Shuva. This movie was based on a novel by the famous writer Rabindranath Tagore. It starred Shakib Khan and Dilara Hanif Purnima. Both critics and audiences really liked the film.
In 2013, he directed Devdas. This was based on a popular novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Interestingly, he had also directed an earlier version of Devdas in 1982. The 2013 film featured Shakib Khan as Devdas, along with Moushumi and Apu Biswas. It was well-received and did well at the box office. It also won three National Film Awards.
Nazrul Islam was also involved in leading roles in the film industry. He was the chairman of the Bangladesh Film Director's Association. He also served as a member of the censor board and a joint production committee.
His Passing
Chashi Nazrul Islam passed away at the age of 73. He died from liver cancer at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on January 11, 2015. Two of his films were released after his death: Ontorongo (December 6, 2015) and Bhul Jodi Hoy (January 8, 2016).
