History of Chatham Village
The first people settled in Chatham in 1896. This happened when the Munising Railway Company built a train line through the area. This company later became known as Lake Superior and Ishpeming.
The railroad company and the Sutherland Innis lumber company worked together. They planned out the village where the train tracks crossed a main road. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, cutting down trees (logging) was the main business here. Many lumber companies, like Sutherland Innis and Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, had logging camps all around the area.
