History of Chattanooga
Chattanooga started after a large area called the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation was opened for new settlers. This happened on August 6, 1901. A man named N. C. Sisson named the town after his hometown in Tennessee.
The Chattanooga Town Company, which included Sisson and two other people, officially got the land for the town on December 18, 1902. The town's post office opened in January of the next year.
Railroad and Growth
The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway was very important for Chattanooga. A train line was built from Lawton to Chattanooga in 1903. This railway helped people get to a new area called the Big Pasture, which opened for settlement in 1906.
The train line was later extended to Grandfield by 1920. However, it was no longer used after 1942. Because it had a train line, Chattanooga quickly became a center for farming. By 1912, it had places to process cotton, a lumberyard, and other small businesses. In 1930, the town still had two cotton gins and two grain elevators.
