Cheer Chen Chi-chen (Chinese: 陳綺貞) is a famous singer and songwriter from Taiwan. She was born on June 6, 1975. Cheer Chen is known for writing and performing her own songs, often playing the guitar or piano. Her music style includes indie, rock, and folk sounds. Her most recent album, Sofa Sea, came out in 2018.

Early Life and School
Cheer Chen was born in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. Her mother always supported her love for music from a very young age. Cheer went to Taipei Municipal Jingmei Girls' Senior High School. Later, she studied at National Chengchi University. A song she wrote, "Little School Song," is often thought of as the special theme song for her high school.
Music Career Highlights
Cheer Chen started her music journey in the 1990s. She was the singer and guitarist in a band called Sunscreen. In 1997, she made her first solo recordings. A famous Taiwanese rock musician, Wu Bai, noticed her talent at one of her early shows.
Starting Out
In 1997, Cheer Chen signed with Rock Records, a big music company. Her first album, Think Twice, was released in July 1998. At that time, she was still a student at National Chengchi University, where she earned a degree in Philosophy.
Songwriting and Style
Cheer Chen writes most of her own songs and lyrics. Most of her songs are in Mandarin Chinese, but she also sings in English sometimes. She often plays the acoustic guitar in her songs. Sometimes, she also plays the electric guitar and piano.
She has performed with the popular Taiwanese band Mayday several times. Ashin, the singer from Mayday, once said that Cheer Chen's lyrics are like a "soft knife" – they seem gentle but are actually very powerful.
Independent Music and Awards
In 2002, Cheer Chen's album Groupies was recognized as one of the 200 best albums ever by the Taiwanese Musician Institute. In 2003, she decided to leave Rock Records. Since then, she has released her music independently, meaning she manages her own releases.
Her 2006 album, Peripeteia, won awards for Best Music Album Producer and Best Music Video at the 17th Golden Melody Awards. These awards are like the Grammys in Taiwan. She was also nominated for Best Female Singer that year. In 2010, she was nominated for another Golden Melody Award for Best Songwriter.
Working with Brands
Cheer Chen has also worked with several well-known brands.
- In 2004 and 2005, she appeared in commercials for Lee Jeans.
- In 2009, she became a spokesperson for Nikon cameras.
- In 2010, she was in an Adidas commercial with other famous people like David Beckham.
- In 2011, she became the spokesperson for Sokenbicha herbal drink in Taiwan.
Recent Albums and Projects
In 2009, Cheer Chen released her fifth album, Immortal. This album was special because it was recorded in her own bedroom! It was even mastered by Grammy Award winner Bernie Grundman. Immortal was one of the top 10 best-selling Mandarin albums in Hong Kong that year. She went on a big tour across Asia and Australia to support the album.
In 2012, Cheer Chen started an electronic music project called The Verse with producer Tiger Chung. She has even performed some of their songs at her solo concerts. She released the album Songs of Transience in 2013. After taking a break from music for a few years, her seventh album, Sofa Sea, was released in December 2018.
Personal Life
Cheer Chen was in a long-term relationship with music producer Tiger Chung for over ten years until 2019.
