Early Life and School
Cheer Chen was born in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. From a young age, her mother encouraged her interest in music.
She attended Taipei Municipal Jingmei Girls' Senior High School. A song she wrote, called "Little School Song" (小小校歌), became so popular that many people think of it as the school's unofficial theme song. After high school, she studied philosophy at National Chengchi University and graduated with a degree.
Music Career
Getting Started
In the 1990s, before she was famous, Cheer Chen was the singer and guitarist for a band called Sunscreen (防曬油). She started making her own demo recordings in 1997.
One night, while performing at a small club, she was noticed by a famous Taiwanese rock musician named Wu Bai. He was very impressed with her talent. This helped her get a contract with Rock Records in 1997. She released her first album, Think Twice, in 1998 while she was still a university student.
Becoming a Star
Cheer Chen writes the lyrics and music for almost all of her songs. She often plays the acoustic guitar, but sometimes plays the electric guitar or piano.
She has worked with other famous artists, including the popular Taiwanese band Mayday. The lead singer of Mayday, Ashin, once said that Cheer's lyrics are like a "soft knife." He meant that her words seem gentle on the surface but are actually very powerful and sharp with meaning.
In 2002, her album Groupies was named one of the 200 best albums of all time by the Taiwanese Musician Institute. This was a huge honor and showed how respected she was in the music world.
Going Independent
In 2003, Cheer Chen decided to leave her record label and release her music on her own. This is called being an "independent artist." It gave her more freedom to create the music she wanted to make.
Her 2006 album, Peripeteia, was a big success. It won awards for Best Music Album Producer and Best Music Video at the 17th Golden Melody Awards, which are like the Grammy Awards for Chinese-language music.
Her popularity grew, and she appeared in commercials for big brands like Lee Jeans, Nikon cameras, and Adidas.
Later Albums and Projects
In 2009, Cheer Chen released her fifth album, Immortal. What's amazing is that she recorded the entire album in her own bedroom! The album was a bestseller and led to a tour across Asia and Australia.
In 2012, she started a new music project called The Verse with a producer named Tiger Chung. They explored electronic and experimental music together.
After a few years away from her solo music, she released the album Songs of Transience in 2013. Her most recent album, Sofa Sea, came out in 2018.
