Cheng Siwei (born June 1935 – died 12 July 2015) was an important person in China. He was a smart economist (someone who studies how money and resources work). He was also a chemical engineer (someone who designs processes to make chemicals). On top of that, he was a politician (someone involved in government).
Cheng Siwei held many important jobs. He led groups like the China Soft Science Research Association. He was also in charge of the Chinese Society for Management Modernization. He helped lead research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was also a professor at several top universities.

Early Life and Learning
Cheng Siwei was born in June 1935. This was in a place called Xiangxiang, in Hunan Province, China.
He went to school in Hong Kong from 1948 to 1951. After that, he moved to Mainland China. He studied at the Workers' College of Guangzhou South University. From 1952 to 1956, he went to the South China Institute of Technology and East China Institute of Chemical Technology. There, he learned about making inorganic chemicals.
Later, from 1958 to 1973, he worked for the government. He worked in different departments that dealt with chemicals and oil.
His Career and Leadership Roles

From 1973 to 1981, Cheng Siwei was the Chief Engineer. This was for the Science & Technology Bureau of China's Ministry of Chemical Industry.
In 1981, he went to the University of California, Los Angeles in the United States. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in 1984. This degree teaches you how to manage businesses.
After his studies, he returned to China. He went back to his job as Chief Engineer until 1988. Then, he was promoted to Vice-President and Chief Engineer. This was for the Scientific and Technical Research Institute. In 1993, he became the Deputy Chief Engineer. From 1994 to 1997, he was the Vice-Minister of Chemical Industry.
During this time, he also took on political roles. From 1996 to 2007, he was the Chairman of the China Democratic National Construction Association (CDNCA). This is a political group in China. From 1998 to 2008, he was the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. This group helps make laws for China. He was given an honorary degree from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
His Academic Work
Cheng Siwei studied many interesting topics. He looked at complexity science, which is about how complicated systems work. He also studied the "fictitious economy." This means things like stocks and bonds, which are not physical goods but represent value. He also researched venture capital, which is money given to new businesses that have a lot of potential.
He wrote many books. Some of his books include Chromic Salts Technology and Soft Science and Reform. He also wrote about China's economy and its changes. In 2010, some of his books were translated into English. This was so people all over the world could read his ideas. He published nearly 300 works in total.
In his later years, he focused on using complexity science. He wanted to understand how China's economy was changing and growing. He worked hard to explain how the fictitious economy works. He also strongly supported the growth of venture capital in China.
His Passing
Cheng Siwei passed away in Beijing. He died on the morning of 12 July 2015. He was 80 years old.
