Exploring the Communities of Cherry Grove Township
Cherry Grove Township is home to a few smaller communities. These places have their own unique history.
Axin
Axin is a small, unincorporated community within the township. It was settled a long time ago, about 9.5 miles (15.3 km) southwest of a larger city called Cadillac. The community was named after a local resident, J. Axin Morgan. Axin even had its own post office from 1899 until 1943.
Benson
Benson is another unincorporated community in the township. It's located about one mile south of the M-55 highway and five miles west of Cadillac. This community was named after a local farmer named Swan Benson. Like Axin, Benson also had a post office for a while, from 1884 to 1911.
Cherry Grove (Original Settlement)
The original Cherry Grove community was one of the first settlements in the township. It had a rural post office that opened briefly in 1879.
Wedgewood
Wedgewood is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place. This means it's a recognized area for gathering population data. You can find Wedgewood in the southeast part of the township.

Cherry Grove Township covers a total area of about 36.21 square miles (93.78 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 33.37 square miles (86.43 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 2.84 square miles (7.36 square kilometers), is water.
Water Features
A large part of Lake Mitchell is located in the northeast section of the township. This lake is a notable natural feature in the area.
Major Roads
Two important highways pass through or near Cherry Grove Township:
M-55 runs from east to west through the northern part of the township.
- M-115 passes through a very small section of the northeast corner of the township.
People Who Live Here
In 2000, there were 2,328 people living in Cherry Grove Township. The population density was about 69.8 people per square mile. Most of the people living here were White (97.98%).
There were 908 households in the township. About 32.4% of these households had children under 18 years old living with them. Many households (70.9%) were married couples living together.
The population's age was spread out:
- 24.7% were under 18 years old.
- 5.1% were between 18 and 24.
- 26.6% were between 25 and 44.
