Cherry Jones, born on November 21, 1956, is a talented American actress. She began her acting journey in theater in 1980. Later, she moved into movies and television. She is well-known for her strong performances on stage and screen.
Cherry Jones has won many important awards for her acting. These include three Primetime Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards. She was also nominated for an Olivier Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
She first appeared on Broadway in 1987 in the play Stepping Out. She won two Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Play. These were for her roles in The Heiress in 1995 and Doubt in 2005. She was also nominated for Tony Awards for her roles in Our Country's Good (1991), A Moon for the Misbegotten (2000), and The Glass Menagerie (2014). Her most recent Broadway show was The Lifespan of a Fact in 2018.
On television, Cherry Jones is famous for playing Barbara Layton in The West Wing. She also played President Allison Taylor in the TV series 24. For her role in 24, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2009. She also won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her guest roles. Early Life and Education
Cherry Jones was born in Paris, Tennessee. Her mother was a high school teacher. Her father owned a flower shop. Her parents were very supportive of her acting dreams. They encouraged her by sending her to acting classes.
She also credits her high school speech teacher, Linda Wilson, for her early training. Cherry Jones graduated from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in 1978. While studying there, she was one of the first actors to work at City Theatre in Pittsburgh.
Acting Career Highlights
Most of Cherry Jones's career has been in theater. She started in 1980 as a founding member of the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Broadway Successes
She won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play for two of her Broadway roles. These were in The Heiress in 1995 and Doubt in 2005.
Other Broadway shows she was in include Imaginary Friends and A Moon for the Misbegotten. She also performed in Our Country's Good, which earned her first Tony nomination. Many people consider her one of the best theater actresses in the United States. In 1994, she also joined the Broadway show Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America: Perestroika.

Cherry Jones has also narrated many audiobooks. She read the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. These include Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, and The Long Winter.

In 2012, she starred in the NBC drama series Awake. She played Dr. Judith Evans, a psychiatrist. Also in 2012, she played Amanda Wingfield in a play called The Glass Menagerie.
In 2014, Cherry Jones was honored by being added to the American Theater Hall of Fame.
From 2015 to 2019, Jones had a recurring role in the Amazon comedy-drama series Transparent. She was nominated for an award for her work in the 2015 season. In 2016, she appeared in an episode of the show Black Mirror called "Nosedive".
In 2018, Jones played Holly in The Handmaid's Tale. Holly is the mother of the main character, June. She won an Emmy Award for this performance. In 2019, Jones played a psychic in the comedy movie Wine Country.
