The children of Muhammad were the sons and daughters of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Most people believe he had three sons and four daughters. All of them were born to his first wife, Khadija bint Khuwaylid, except for one son named Ibrahim. Ibrahim's mother was Maria al-Qibtiyya.
Some Shia Muslims believe that Fatima was Muhammad's only biological daughter. Muhammad also had an adopted son named Zayd ibn Harithah.

Who Were Muhammad's Children?
Different Islamic groups have slightly different views on Muhammad's children. Here's what most Sunni sources say, listed by when they were born:
- Qasim (born around 598 – died around 601)
- Zainab (born around 599 – died around 629)
- Ruqayyah (born around 601 – died around 624)
- Umm Kulthum (born around 603 – died around 630)
- Fatima (born around 605 – died around 632)
- Abdullah (born around 611 – died around 615)

Shia View on Daughters
Some Shia sources have a different idea about three of Muhammad's daughters: Zainab, Ruqayyah, and Umm Kulthum. They believe these three were adopted by Muhammad. This happened after their mother, Hala, who was Khadija's sister, passed away.
Many Shia Muslims believe that Fatima was Muhammad's only biological daughter. This belief is common among Shias in places like South Asia.
Muhammad's Descendants
All of Muhammad's sons died when they were very young children. This meant that his family line did not continue through his sons.
His daughters grew up, but they also passed away relatively young.
- Fatima married Ali ibn Abi Talib.
- Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum both married Uthman, one after the other.
- Zainab married Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi.
Umm Kulthum did not have any children. Ruqayyah had a son named Abd Allah, but he died when he was six years old. Zainab had a son named Ali and a daughter named Umama. Later, Ali ibn Abi Talib married Umama after Fatima's death.
Fatima had two sons, Hasan and Husayn. It is through Fatima that Muhammad's family line has continued and spread throughout the Muslim world. People who are descendants of Fatima are given special titles like sayyid (meaning 'lord' or 'sir') or sharif (meaning 'noble'). They are highly respected in the Muslim community.
How Muhammad Parented
Muslims look at how Muhammad treated his children as a perfect example to follow. Stories about his parenting are found in Islamic texts called hadith. These stories show his love and care for his children.
For example, Muhammad showed great love for his daughter Fatima. He was a loving father who cared deeply for his family. His actions are seen as a guide for how parents should raise their children with kindness and affection.
