Discovering the China 3 Lychee
What Makes China 3 Special?
The trees that grow China 3 lychees are usually about 5 to 6 meters tall. They have smaller leaves compared to some other lychee trees. These trees produce fruit regularly if they are well cared for. If not, they might not produce fruit every year.
China 3 is a late-ripening variety. This means its fruits are ready to pick in the last week of June. The fruits are round and have a mix of red, orange, and green colors. Each fruit weighs about 25 grams.
Inside the Fruit
When you open a China 3 lychee, you'll find creamy white pulp inside. This pulp is soft and very juicy! It's also quite sweet, with a sweetness level of about 18 percent (this is called TSS, or Total Soluble Solids). The seed inside is small, and there's a lot of delicious pulp compared to the seed. The pulp-to-seed ratio is about 15:1, meaning there's 15 times more pulp than seed.
Growing China 3 Lychee Trees
When to Plant
China 3 lychee trees are usually planted during the rainy season, which is around June to July. However, the very best time to plant them is in May or June. This is when the weather is humid, but not too wet or too dry.
You can also plant them after the rainy season, in August or September. If you plant them at this time, you'll need to water them regularly. This helps the young trees grow strong and healthy in their new home.
How Far Apart to Plant Them
In older lychee farms, trees were planted quite far apart, about 10 to 12 meters between each tree. This wide spacing works well in places where the soil is deep and rich. It also helps if the trees get good care when they are young.
In other areas, planting trees 7 to 8 meters apart was enough. Nowadays, some farms are trying "high-density planting." This means planting the trees much closer together, usually about 4 meters apart in all directions. This method allows farmers to grow more trees in a smaller space.
