What is Chinese Wikipedia?
How Did It Get Its Name?
The name "Wikipedia" comes from two words put together. It combines "Wiki" and "encyclopedia". A "Wiki" is a special technology that lets many people work together to create something. An "encyclopedia" is a book or website that has information on many different topics.
At first, the Chinese Wikipedia didn't have a Chinese name. People just called it "Zhongwen Wikipedia," which means "Chinese Wikipedia." But on October 21, 2003, the Chinese Wikipedia community voted to choose a Chinese name. They picked "Weiji Baike" (维基百科/維基百科).
The word "Weiji" sounds a lot like "Wiki." The first part, "Wei" (维/維), means a rope that can connect things, like a net. The second part, "Ji" (基), means something basic or a foundation. So, "Weiji Baike" means "the online encyclopedia that covers all of humanity's basic knowledge."
Becoming a Confirmed Editor
On the Chinese Wikipedia, there's a special rule for new users. To become an "autoconfirmed" user, you need to do a few things. You must make at least 50 edits to articles. Also, your account needs to be more than 7 days old.
Once you are autoconfirmed, you can edit "semi-protected" pages. These are pages that only confirmed users can change. This rule helps keep the articles safe from unwanted changes.
