Who is Chris McLeod?
Chris McLeod is a Gurindji man. His traditional country is in the Northern Territory, near a town called Katherine.
Family History
Chris McLeod's mother and grandmother were part of the Stolen generation. This was a sad time in Australia's history when many Aboriginal children were taken from their families. His mother was brought to Adelaide by a priest who helped Aboriginal people.
Before Becoming a Bishop
Before becoming a bishop, Chris McLeod worked with Indigenous people for more than 20 years. He was a rector (a type of church leader) at St Jude's Church in Brighton, a suburb of Adelaide.
Becoming a Bishop
In April 2015, Chris McLeod was chosen to be an assistant bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide. This was a big moment because he became only the third Aboriginal Australian to become a bishop.
Important Aboriginal Bishops
The first Aboriginal bishop was Arthur Malcolm, who served from 1985 to 2000. The second was Jim Leftwich, who served from 2001 to 2010. Chris McLeod is the second person to hold the special role of National Aboriginal Bishop, following Jim Leftwich.
Encouraging Respect
Chris McLeod has encouraged Christians to include an "acknowledgement of country" in their church gatherings. This is a way to show respect for the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land. He believes it is a good and respectful practice.
Dean of St Peter's Cathedral
In August 2021, it was announced that Chris McLeod would become the next dean of St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide. He officially started this role on October 31, 2021. Being a dean means he is the main leader of the cathedral, which is a very important church building.
