Chris Rumph, born on December 21, 1971, is a well-known American football coach. He is currently the defensive ends coach for the Clemson University team. Before this, he coached the defensive line for the Minnesota Vikings in the National Football League (NFL). Rumph has coached college football for more than 15 years.

Playing Football in College

Chris Rumph played college football at the University of South Carolina. He was a linebacker on the defensive side of the team. He played under coaches Sparky Woods and Brad Scott.

Chris Rumph's Coaching Journey

Starting His Coaching Career

After finishing college, Rumph began his coaching career. He worked as a graduate assistant at his old college. Then, he became the head coach at his former high school for five years.

He later coached defensive backs for one year at South Carolina State. After that, he spent three years coaching outside linebackers at Memphis. In 2006, Rumph joined the Clemson staff. He stayed there for five seasons.

Winning Championships at Alabama

After Clemson, Rumph moved to Alabama. He became the defensive line coach. During his time there, he helped the team win two national championships in a row. These were the 2011 and 2012 BCS National Championships.

Coaching at Texas

In 2014, Rumph coached at Texas. He was the assistant head coach for defense and also coached the defensive line.

Time with the Florida Gators

Rumph joined the Florida Gators in 2015. He started as their defensive line coach. In 2017, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator. He also served as the full-time defensive coordinator for the last four games of that season.

Coaching at Tennessee

Rumph then worked as the co-defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Volunteers. He coached there during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Moving to the NFL

Rumph made the jump to the NFL in 2020. He coached the outside linebackers for the Houston Texans.

In 2021, he became the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. He left the team after the 2021 season.

From 2022 to 2023, Rumph coached the defensive line for the Minnesota Vikings. He worked under head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Returning to Clemson

In 2024, Chris Rumph returned to Clemson University. He is now coaching the defensive ends there.

Chris Rumph's Family Life

Chris Rumph is married to Kila. They have two sons together. He also has a daughter from before his marriage. One of his sons, Chris Rumph II, also plays football. He played college football at Duke. In the 2021 NFL Draft, he was chosen by the Los Angeles Chargers.
