Chris Rumph was born on December 21, 1971. He is an American football coach. Currently, he works as the defensive ends coach at Clemson University. Before joining Clemson again, he coached for many years in college football and also in the National Football League (NFL).

Playing Football
Chris Rumph played college football at the University of South Carolina. He was a linebacker, which is a defensive position, for the South Carolina Gamecocks team. He played under coaches Sparky Woods and Brad Scott.
Coaching Journey
Chris Rumph has had a long and successful career as a football coach.
Starting Out as a Coach
After finishing college, Rumph began his coaching journey. He worked as a graduate assistant at his old college, the University of South Carolina. Then, he became the head coach at his former high school for five years.
He also coached defensive backs at South Carolina State for one year. After that, he spent three years coaching outside linebackers at Memphis. In 2006, Rumph joined Clemson's coaching staff and stayed there for five seasons.
Coaching in College Football
Alabama Crimson Tide
From Clemson, Rumph moved to the University of Alabama. He became the defensive line coach there. During his time at Alabama, he helped the team win two national championships in a row. These were the BCS national championships in 2011 and 2012.
Texas Longhorns
In 2014, Rumph coached at the University of Texas. He was the assistant head coach for defense and also coached the defensive line for the 2014 season.
Florida Gators
Rumph joined the Florida Gators as a defensive line coach in 2015. He was promoted to co-defensive coordinator before the 2017 season. He even served as the full-time defensive coordinator for the last four games of that season.
Tennessee Volunteers
Rumph worked as the co-defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Volunteers in both the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Coaching in the NFL
Houston Texans
In 2020, Chris Rumph moved to the National Football League (NFL). He became the outside linebackers coach for the Houston Texans during the 2020 season.
Chicago Bears
In 2021, Rumph became the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. He left the team after the 2021 season when the head coach was no longer with the team.
Minnesota Vikings
In 2022, Rumph joined the Minnesota Vikings as their defensive line coach. He worked under head coach Kevin O'Connell for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Return to Clemson
In 2024, Chris Rumph returned to Clemson University. He is currently the defensive ends coach for the Clemson Tigers.
Family Life
Chris Rumph is married to Kila, and they have two sons together. He also has a daughter from before his marriage. One of his sons, Chris Rumph II, also plays football. He played college football at Duke University. In 2021, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers to play in the NFL.
