St. Matthews is a town located in Calhoun County, South Carolina, in the United States. It is the main town, also known as the county seat, of Calhoun County. In 2020, about 1,841 people lived there.

St. Matthews is part of the larger Columbia, South Carolina area. Each April, the town hosts a fun Purple Martin festival. This event includes food, music, cars, and many other activities for everyone to enjoy.

History of St. Matthews

St. Matthews started as a town called Amelia in the 1730s. Governor Robert Johnson helped create it.

Several important places in St. Matthews are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Col. J.A. Banks House, the Calhoun County Courthouse, and the Calhoun County Library. Other historic spots are the Buyck's Bluff Archeological Site, the Cherokee Path, and the Prehistoric Indian Village. These sites help tell the story of the town's past.

Geography and Location

St. Matthews is right in the middle of Calhoun County. You can find it at coordinates 33.664734 degrees North and -80.778976 degrees West.

U.S. Route 601 goes through the town. This road leads northeast about 51 miles (82 km) to Camden. It also goes southwest about 13 miles (21 km) to Orangeburg.

South Carolina Highway 6 crosses US 601 in the center of St. Matthews. Highway 6 goes west about 7 miles (11 km) to Interstate 26. It also heads southeast about 22 miles (35 km) to Interstate 95 near Santee.

The town covers a total area of about 1.93 square miles (4.99 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.

Education and Learning

Public schools in St. Matthews are managed by the Calhoun County School District. The district has two schools for younger students: St. Matthews K-8 School and Sandy Run K-8 School. Older students attend Calhoun County High School.

There is also a private school called Calhoun Academy.

St. Matthews has a lending library for everyone to use. It is called the Calhoun County Public Library.

The town is also home to the Calhoun County Museum. This museum is on Butler Street and has many old items and stories about St. Matthews' history.
