Christ Church, Turnham Green is an important Church of England church. It is located on the eastern side of Turnham Green in Chiswick, west London. Both the church and the green around it are well-known local spots. They are considered very special historically by the London Borough of Hounslow. The church is also a Grade II listed building, which means it's protected because of its historical importance.

History of Christ Church

Christ Church was planned in 1841. It was built to serve the growing number of people living in Turnham Green. For them, walking to St Nicholas Church by the River Thames was too far.

The church building cost about £6,900. A group called the Church Building Commissioners helped pay for it. They gave £500 under a special law from 1818. This means Christ Church is known as a Commissioners' church.

In the early 1990s, the inside of the church was changed. The old wooden pews were taken out. They were replaced with separate chairs. The floor was also covered with concrete and carpet. In 2000, the west side of the church was updated. It was turned into two floors of community rooms. This work was overseen by architect Ian Goldsmith.

Church Design and Style

The church was designed in a style called Gothic revival. This means it looks like older churches from the Gothic period. The architects were Sir George Gilbert Scott and his partner William Moffatt. The building was finished in 1843.

Later, in 1887, the chancel was made longer. The chancel is the part of the church where the altar is. Architect James Brooks made this change. He gave it the square eastern end you see today.

The design of Christ Church was highly praised. In 1841, a journal called The Ecclesiologist wrote about it. They said the tower and spire were "peculiarly excellent". They even said they were "worthy of any ancient architect." This shows how well-designed the church was considered.

St Alban's: A Sister Church

St Alban's Church, Acton Green is another church nearby. It is located on the green at the northern edge of Chiswick. This church had not been used for some time.

However, in 2016, St Alban's Church was repaired and reopened. It is now part of the Christ Church ministry. This means it works together with Christ Church to serve the community.
