Christ Church, Turnham Green is an important Anglican church located in Chiswick, west London. It stands on the eastern side of Turnham Green. This church is a Grade II listed building, which means it's a special historic place. Both the church and the green are well-known local sights. The London Borough of Hounslow considers them very important historically.

History of the Church

Why Christ Church Was Built

Christ Church was planned in 1841. It was needed because the area of Turnham Green was growing. Many people lived there and found it hard to walk to St Nicholas Church. That church was located far away by the River Thames.

Building Costs and Help

The church building cost about £6,900. The Church Building Commissioners helped with £500. This money came from the Church Building Act of 1818. Because of this help, Christ Church is known as a Commissioners' church.

Changes Over Time

The church was updated in the early 1990s. The old wooden pews were taken out. They were replaced with separate chairs. The floor was also covered with concrete and carpet.

In the year 2000, the west parts of the church were changed. They became two-story rooms for the community. An architect named Ian Goldsmith oversaw this work.

Church Design and Style

Who Designed the Church?

The church was designed in the Gothic Revival style. This style looks like old medieval churches. The famous architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and his partner William Moffatt designed it. The building was finished in 1843.

Later Additions

In 1887, the chancel was made longer. The chancel is the part of the church near the altar. It was given its current square shape at the eastern end. This work was done by architect James Brooks.

Praise for the Design

The design of Christ Church was highly praised. The journal The Ecclesiologist wrote about it in 1841. It said that the church's tower and spire were "peculiarly excellent." It also said they were "worthy of any ancient architect."

Sister Church: St Alban's

St Alban's Church, Acton Green is another church nearby. It is located on the green at the northern edge of Chiswick. This church had not been used for some time.

In 2016, St Alban's Church was fixed up and reopened. It is now part of the Christ Church ministry. This means it works together with Christ Church.
