Christian Friedrich Tieck (born August 14, 1776 – died May 24, 1851) was a famous German sculptor. People often called him Friedrich Tieck. He mostly created statues of people and busts (sculptures of a person's head and shoulders). He also sometimes painted.

Early Life and Training

Friedrich Tieck was born in Berlin in 1776. He was the third child in his family. His father worked as a rope-maker.

When he was 13, in 1789, Tieck started learning how to be a sculptor. He trained with Heinrich Bettkober. Later, in 1795, he continued his training at the Prussian Academy of Art in Berlin. There, he learned from a very important sculptor named Johann Gottfried Schadow. He also studied with David d'Angers in Paris.

Important Works and Travels

From 1801 to 1805, Tieck worked in Weimar. Here, he became friends with the famous writer Goethe. Tieck designed a bust of Goethe, which he later made from marble for the Walhalla temple.

In 1805, Tieck traveled to Italy. He returned to Germany in 1809. Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria invited him back. Tieck made many busts for the Prince in Munich and Carrara. These included busts of the Prince himself, and of famous people like Alexander von Humboldt.

In 1819, Tieck started creating a series of sculptures. These were based on old myths for the Royal Theatre in Berlin. In 1820, he became a professor at the Berlin Academy. He designed statues of spirits for the National Monument for the Liberation Wars. He worked on this project until 1829.

After that, he created sculptures for the Berlin Museum. These included a large bronze group of "Horse Tamers" on the roof. He also made a statue of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Other Notable Creations

Tieck designed the tomb for General Gerhard von Scharnhorst. This tomb is located at Berlin's Invalidenfriedhof and was finished in 1822. He also made a bust of Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder. Another work was a bronze lion, based on a model by Christian Daniel Rauch.

His monument to Nicolaus Copernicus was put up in Thorn after Tieck had passed away.

Tieck was a leading artist from the school of sculptors started by Rauch. His style was very smooth and detailed.

He passed away in Berlin in 1851.

Family Life

Friedrich Tieck had two siblings. His brother was Ludwig Tieck, a well-known writer. His sister was Sophie Tieck.
