Early Life and Education
Christoph Ahlhaus was born on August 28, 1969, in Heidelberg, a city in Germany. He grew up in Heidelberg. After finishing school, he completed a banking apprenticeship from 1988 to 1990.
He then decided to study law. He attended several universities, including Heidelberg University, University of Munich, and Free University of Berlin. In 1999, he became a qualified lawyer. In May 2006, he married Simone Ahlhaus. In 2014, he moved with his family to Berlin, where he works as a lawyer.
Political Career in the CDU
Christoph Ahlhaus began his political journey by joining the CDU in 1985. He held various leadership roles within the party in Heidelberg until 2001.
From 2001 to 2006, he worked as the regional secretary for the CDU in Hamburg. He was also a member of the Hamburg Parliament from March 2004 to March 2006. During this time, he served on committees that dealt with legal matters and home affairs. Until June 2012, he was the chairman of the CDU in Hamburg-Nord.
Serving in the Hamburg Senate
In April 2006, the then-Mayor of Hamburg, Ole von Beust, appointed Christoph Ahlhaus as a state councilor for sports and home affairs. Later, on May 7, 2008, Ahlhaus became the Home Affairs Senator for Hamburg. This role meant he was in charge of important areas like public safety and order for the city.
During his time as Home Affairs Senator, some of his decisions were discussed publicly. For example, he supported keeping the police orchestra, which costs money each year. He believed it was important, even when other cultural budgets were being reduced.
Becoming First Mayor of Hamburg
In July 2010, Mayor Ole von Beust announced he would step down. He suggested Christoph Ahlhaus as his replacement. The CDU party in Hamburg agreed with this choice. The election for the new First Mayor was set for August 25, 2010.
At the time, the CDU was in a coalition government with another party called the GAL (Green-Alternative List). The GAL party was initially unsure about Ahlhaus because they saw him as more conservative than the previous mayor. They wanted to make sure he would continue to follow the agreements made between the two parties. Ahlhaus confirmed he would uphold the coalition agreement.
Before the election, it became known that Ahlhaus had been a member of a student fraternity called Turnerschaft Ghibellinia. This caused some concern for the GAL party, who questioned if they should support him. Ahlhaus stated that he had not been in contact with the fraternity for many years and had asked to no longer be considered a member.
Despite these discussions, Christoph Ahlhaus was elected First Mayor of Hamburg on August 25, 2010. He received enough votes to win on the first try.
End of Term as Mayor
Christoph Ahlhaus's time as First Mayor was relatively short. On November 28, 2010, the GAL party decided to end their partnership with the CDU. This meant the coalition government broke apart.
Because the coalition ended, Ahlhaus had to dismiss the GAL senators and state councilors from their positions on November 29, 2010. After this, Christoph Ahlhaus led a CDU minority government. This means his party did not have enough seats in parliament to pass laws easily without support from other parties. His term as First Mayor ended on March 7, 2011.
