Early Life and Education
Christoph Ahlhaus was born on August 28, 1969, in Heidelberg, a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He grew up in Heidelberg.
From 1988 to 1990, he completed a training program in banking. After that, he decided to study law. He attended several universities, including Heidelberg, Munich, Berlin, and Speyer.
In 1999, after finishing his studies and training, he became a qualified lawyer. In May 2006, he married Simone Ahlhaus. Today, he lives with his family in Berlin and works as a lawyer.
Starting in Politics
Christoph Ahlhaus began his political journey with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1985. He held various positions within the party. Until 2001, he was the Chairman of the local party group in Heidelberg-Altstadt-Schlierbach. He also served as the Deputy Chairman for the Heidelberg District Association.
From 2001 to 2006, he worked as the regional secretary for the CDU in Hamburg. He also became a member of the Hamburg Parliament, which is like the state parliament for Hamburg. He served there from March 2004 to March 2006. During this time, he was part of committees that dealt with legal and home affairs. Until June 2012, he was the Chairman of the CDU in Hamburg-Nord.
Becoming a Senator in Hamburg
In April 2006, the mayor of Hamburg at the time, Ole von Beust, appointed Christoph Ahlhaus as a state councilor for the Department of Sport and Home Affairs. This was an important step in his political career.
On May 7, 2008, Ahlhaus took on an even bigger role. He became the Home Affairs Senator for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In this position, he was responsible for many important areas related to public safety and administration within the city.
Leading Hamburg as Mayor
On July 18, 2010, Mayor Ole von Beust announced he would be stepping down. He suggested Christoph Ahlhaus as his replacement. The CDU party in Hamburg agreed with this choice.
The election for the First Mayor was set for August 25, 2010. This was after the summer break for the parliament. The political parties that formed the government, the CDU and the Green Party (GAL), had to agree on the new mayor.
Christoph Ahlhaus promised to uphold the agreements between the CDU and GAL. He also met with members of the Green Party to discuss their concerns. Both sides expressed confidence that they could continue working together.
On August 25, 2010, Christoph Ahlhaus was elected as the First Mayor of Hamburg. He received 70 votes in favor. This was more than the number of votes from the CDU and Green Party members combined, meaning some opposition members also voted for him.
End of Term
On November 28, 2010, the Green Party decided to end their partnership with the CDU. This meant the coalition government came to an end.
Because of this, Mayor Ahlhaus had to dismiss the Green Party senators and state councilors on November 29, 2010. After this, Christoph Ahlhaus led a CDU minority government. His term as mayor ended on March 7, 2011.
