Chubbtown is a small, special place in Floyd County, Georgia, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

History of Chubbtown: A Unique Community

Chubbtown has a very interesting history. It was started in 1864 by a man named Henry Chubb. This community was unique because it was founded as a place for free African-Americans.

How Chubbtown Grew and Prospered

The Chubb family built a strong community. They owned and ran many businesses. These businesses served both Black and White people in the area.

  • A general store for everyday needs
  • A blacksmith shop for metalwork
  • A grist mill to grind grain
  • A syrup mill for sweet treats
  • A saw mill for lumber
  • A wagon company to build vehicles
  • A cotton gin to process cotton
  • A casket company
  • Several farms

Later, Chubbtown even had its own post office. This showed how self-sufficient the community was.

The Chubb Family's Roots

The Chubb family's history in North America goes back to 1775. Nicholas Chubb, an early ancestor, was listed as a free person in 1820. The family eventually settled in Floyd County, Georgia.

In 1870, Henry Chubb and his brothers sold some land. This land was used for a school and a church for the Black community. This church became the Chubb Chapel United Methodist Church. The Chubb family kept buying land. This helped Chubbtown become a strong, self-sufficient community.

Chubbtown During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, many towns were destroyed. But Chubbtown was lucky. The Union Army did not destroy it. This helped the community continue to grow.

Challenges and Famous Descendants

After 1916, Chubbtown faced a big challenge. A terrible flood destroyed many of its businesses. This made it harder for the community to prosper.

Even with challenges, the Chubb family has a proud legacy. Two famous descendants are Bradley Chubb and Nick Chubb.

  • Bradley Chubb is an outside linebacker in the NFL. He played college football at North Carolina State University.
  • Nick Chubb is a running back in the NFL. He played college football at the University of Georgia.

Both were chosen in the 2018 NFL Draft. Bradley plays for the Denver Broncos, and Nick plays for the Cleveland Browns.

Chubb Chapel United Methodist Church

The Chubb Methodist Episcopal Church is a very important building. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized for its historical importance.
