Charles James Cherundolo, Jr. (born August 8, 1916 – died December 22, 2012) was an important American football player and coach. He played as a center and linebacker for ten seasons. He was part of the National Football League (NFL), playing for teams like the Cleveland Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Chuck was born in Old Forge, Pennsylvania.

Chuck Cherundolo's Football Journey

Chuck Cherundolo played college football at Penn State. He was a very important player there. In 1936, his teammates even voted him as their team captain. He was also named an All-America player. This means he was one of the best college players in the whole country. After college, Chuck played for ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL).

From Player to Coach

After his playing days, Chuck Cherundolo became a coach. He started as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. An assistant coach helps the head coach plan plays and train players. He coached the Steelers from 1949 to 1958.

Chuck took a break from football in 1959. But he soon returned to the Steelers in 1960 as a part-time scout. He then became a full-time assistant coach again for the 1961 season. After that, he coached for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1962 and 1963. He also coached for the Washington Redskins until 1966. Later, he coached for the Chicago Bears for eight years. He also had a one-year coaching job for the Tri-City Apollos. In total, Chuck coached for 22 years in the NFL with four different teams.

Awards and Special Honors

Chuck Cherundolo was recognized for his great playing skills. He was chosen for two NFL All-Star Teams during his time as a player. He was also named second-team All-NFL in three different seasons. This means he was considered one of the best players in the entire league.

In 2007, the Steelers celebrated their 75th anniversary. As part of this celebration, they named Chuck as the center on their Legends team. This special team includes the best players in the Steelers' history up until 1970. It shows how important Chuck was to the team.

About His Family

Chuck Cherundolo was married to Margaret Whitehead. They had two children, a daughter named Patricia and a son named John. Both his son and his grandson played football at the Division I level in college. This is the highest level of college sports.
