The Church of Chelín (also known as Iglesia de Chelín in Spanish) is a beautiful Catholic church. You can find it on Chelín Island, which is part of the Chiloé Archipelago in southern Chile. This island is near the town of Castro.
A Special Church
The Church of Chelín is very important! In the year 2000, it was named a National Monument of Chile. This means it's a special place protected by the country. It's also one of 16 churches in the Chiloé area that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This happened on November 30, 2000. Being a World Heritage Site means it's considered important for everyone in the world to protect and enjoy.
Building the Church
This church is built almost entirely from wood, which is common for churches in the Chiloé region. Its construction was finished in 1888. Over a hundred years later, in 1990, the church was carefully restored to keep it in good condition.
Patron Saint and Parish
The church has a special protector called a patron saint. For the Church of Chelín, the patron saint is Our Lady of the Rosary. People celebrate her feast day every year on August 30. This church is also a main church for one of the 24 parishes that belong to the Diocese of Ancud. A diocese is like a large area managed by a bishop.
