A Look at St Chad's History
How the Church Was Built
St Chad's Church was built by a man named Joseph Paget. He took over his family's business, which included the nearby Pleasley Vale Mills. In 1876, Joseph decided that his family and the mill workers needed a church. So, he had a chapel built overlooking the valley.
This first chapel was made of timber and painted white. It was built by a company called Cox & Sons from London.
Moving the Church Across the River
Later, there was a disagreement about the style of church services. Because of this, Joseph Paget decided to move the church! He had the timber chapel taken apart.
It was then rebuilt just across the River Meden in Nottinghamshire. This move was important because it changed which diocese the church belonged to. It moved from the Diocese of Lichfield to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The rebuilt church was made from stronger materials like brick and stone. It also got a bell tower and a lead roof.
The Church Organ
The organ inside St Chad's Church is quite old. It was made in 1880 by a company called Lloyd & Co, which was based in Nottingham.
