The Story of St Chad's Church
St Chad's Church has an interesting past. It was built by a man named Joseph Paget. He took over his parents' large estate and became a main partner in the nearby Pleasley Vale Mills.
Building the First Church
In 1876, Joseph Paget decided that his family and the workers at the mill needed a church. So, he had a small chapel built. This first chapel was made of timber and painted white. It was located on the Derbyshire side of the River Meden, overlooking the valley.
Moving the Church
Later, there was a disagreement about how the church services were being held. Because of this, Joseph Paget decided to move the church! He had the timber chapel taken apart. Then, it was rebuilt just across the River Meden, on the Nottinghamshire side. This move also meant the church changed from one church area (the Diocese of Lichfield) to another (the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham). The rebuilt church was made stronger, using brick and stone, and it even got a bell tower and a lead roof.
The Church Organ
The organ inside St Chad's Church is quite old. It was made in 1880 by a company called Lloyd & Co, based in Nottingham.
