The Church of St Eadburga is a beautiful and very old church in Ebrington, a village in Gloucestershire, England. It belongs to the Church of England. This church was first built way back in the 13th century, which means it's over 700 years old! Because it's so old and important, it's officially recognized as a Grade I listed building. This means it's a very special historic place that needs to be protected.

Discovering St Eadburga's History

How Old Is the Church?

The oldest part of the church is its main open area, called the nave. This part was built in the Norman style. Norman architecture was popular in England after the Normans arrived in 1066.

Changes Over the Centuries

Later, in the 13th century, more parts were added. These include the aisle (a side section) and the chancel (the area around the altar). Over hundreds of years, churches often get updated. St Eadburga's had a big update between 1875 and 1876. This was called a Victorian restoration. During this time, many churches were repaired and changed to fit the styles of the Victorian era.

Part of a Bigger Church Family

Today, the church is part of a group of churches called the Vale and Cotswold Edge benefice. This group is part of the larger Diocese of Gloucester, which is like a church district.

Exploring the Church's Architecture

What Is the Building Made Of?

The Church of St Eadburga is made of stone. Its walls are supported by strong stone structures called buttresses. These help the walls stand tall and strong. The roof is made from special limestone slate tiles. The church also has a tower with two main sections, often called a "two-stage tower."

Special Memorials and Art

Inside the church, you can find monuments dedicated to the Fortescue family. This was an important local family. One monument is for Sir John Fortescue. He was a very important judge, known as the Lord Chief Justice. His monument shows him wearing his special robes.

The church also has a beautiful wooden pulpit from the 17th century. A pulpit is where the priest stands to give sermons. This one has a special roof-like cover, making it "canopied." You can also see old stained glass windows. Some of these windows date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. There's even a wooden royal coat of arms from 1725. This shows the royal symbols of the king or queen at that time. The font, used for baptisms, is also very old, dating back to the 13th century.

Remembering Local Heroes

The church holds a special carved wooden board. This board is a memorial to the people from the village who lost their lives during World War II. It helps everyone remember their bravery and sacrifice.
