The Church of St Eadburga is an old church located in Ebrington, a village in Gloucestershire, England. It was built a very long time ago, in the 13th century. This means it is over 700 years old! Because it is so old and important, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. This is the highest level of protection for historic buildings in England. The church belongs to the Church of England.

History of the Church

How Old is the Church?

The oldest part of the church is its main area, called the nave. This part was built during the Norman period. This was a time when people built strong, simple churches after the Normans came to England. Other parts of the church, like the side areas (called aisles) and the area around the altar (called the chancel), were added in the 13th century.

Victorian Updates

Many years later, in 1875 and 1876, the church had a big update. This was called a Victorian restoration. During this time, churches were often repaired and updated to look their best. The church is part of a larger group of churches called the Vale and Cotswold Edge benefice. It is also part of the Diocese of Gloucester, which is a church area led by a bishop.

Church Design and Features

Building Materials

The Church of St Eadburga is made from strong stone. It has special supports on the outside called buttresses. These help the walls stand strong. The roof is made of limestone slate, which is a type of flat stone. The church also has a tower with two main sections.

Inside the Church

Inside, you can find many interesting things. There are special monuments dedicated to the Fortescue family. This family was very important in the area. One monument is for Sir John Fortescue, who was a very important judge called the Lord Chief Justice.

The church has a pulpit from the 17th century. This is a raised platform where the priest gives sermons. It has a beautiful canopy over it. You can also see old stained glass windows. Some of these colorful windows are from the 16th and 17th centuries. There is a wooden royal coat of arms inside, which shows the symbols of the king or queen from 1725. The font, which is a basin used for baptisms, is also very old, dating back to the 13th century.

Remembering History

The church also has a special carved wooden board. This board is a memorial to the people from the village who sadly died during World War II. It helps everyone remember their sacrifice.
