A Look Back: Cidra's History
How Cidra Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a U.S. territory but not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Cidra, along with two other nearby areas called Carreras and Espino, had a total of 1,281 people living there.
