Citra was a popular lemon and lime-flavored soda. It was clear in color, just like a refreshing glass of water! This fizzy drink was first sold in India during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Citra was originally owned by a company called Parle Bisleri. In 1993, a big change happened. Parle Bisleri sold Citra and some of its other well-known brands to Coca-Cola. This deal was reportedly worth about $40 million. At that time, all the Parle brands together had a huge share of the soda market in India. Citra was especially popular in South India. By the year 2000, Citra was slowly stopped being sold. This was to make room for Coca-Cola's global brand, Sprite.
A Different Citra in the US
In 1998, Coca-Cola introduced a new drink in the US. It was also called Citra, but it was very different! This US version was later renamed Fanta Citrus. Even though the name was similar, this drink had a grapefruit flavor, not lemon and lime. So, it was a completely different soda.
Citra's Comeback in India
Years later, in February 2012, Coca-Cola decided to bring Citra back to India. They started selling it again in some rural areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat. This was a test to see how well it would do. The idea was to sell Citra at a lower price, about 20% cheaper than other Coca-Cola drinks and competitor brands. This relaunch aimed to compete with smaller, local soda brands in those areas.
