Cladh Hallan (Scottish Gaelic: Cladh Hàlainn) is an amazing archaeological site. It is found on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. This place is super important because it's the only spot in Great Britain where prehistoric mummies have ever been discovered!
Scientists dug at Cladh Hallan between 1988 and 2002. They found that people lived here as far back as 2000 BC. That's a very long time ago!

Discovering the Ancient Mummies
In 2001, a team of archaeologists made a huge discovery. They found four skeletons at the site. One was a male who died around 1600 BC. The other was a female who died around 1300 BC. This was about the same time as King Tutankhamun lived in Egypt.
At first, the researchers didn't realize these were mummies. This is because the soft parts of the bodies had disappeared. Also, the skeletons had been buried in the ground. But special tests showed something amazing. Both bodies were not buried until about 1120 BC. This means they were kept above ground for hundreds of years!
How Were the Bodies Preserved?
The tests revealed that the bodies were preserved shortly after death. They were placed in a peat bog for about 6 to 18 months. A peat bog is a wet, marshy area. The special conditions in the bog helped to preserve the bodies.
After being in the bog, the preserved bodies were taken out. They were then set up inside a house. Scientists think this was for religious reasons. It's a mystery why the bodies were finally buried centuries later.
What Makes These Mummies Special?
The Cladh Hallan skeletons are different from most other bog bodies.
- Most bog bodies were simply buried in the bog. But these bodies seem to have been put in the bog on purpose to preserve them.
- Usually, bog bodies still have their soft tissues preserved when found. But at Cladh Hallan, the soft parts were gone when the skeletons were discovered. This makes them very unique!
