Trifolium obtusiflorum is a type of clover often called clammy clover. It gets its name because it feels a bit sticky or "clammy" to the touch! This plant grows naturally in California, especially in areas like the Peninsular Ranges, Transverse Ranges, Sierra Nevada, and the California Coast Ranges. You can also find it stretching into southwestern Oregon, particularly in the Cascade Range. Clammy clover likes wet places, such as marshes or along the edges of streams. It can also pop up in areas where the ground has been disturbed.
What is Clammy Clover Like?
Clammy clover (Trifolium obtusiflorum) is an annual herb. This means it lives for only one growing season. It grows straight up and can feel a bit hairy, sticky, and "glandular" (meaning it has tiny glands that produce sticky stuff).
Leaves and Flowers
The leaves of the clammy clover are made up of smaller, pointed oval pieces called leaflets. These leaflets can be up to 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches) long. They have edges that look like tiny, sharp teeth.
The flowers grow together in a cluster called an inflorescence, which looks like a small head. This flower head can be up to 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches) wide. At the bottom of the flower head, there are small, leaf-like parts called bracts, which also have toothed edges.
Each individual flower has a part called a calyx. This calyx is made of sepals, which are like small leaves that protect the flower bud. These sepals narrow into thin, bristle-like tips. The main part of the flower, called the corolla, can be almost 2 centimeters (about 0.8 inches) long. It often has beautiful pink and purple colors, with a white tip.
