Clan Tailyour, also known as Clan Taylor, is a Scottish clan. A "clan" is a large family group in Scotland. This clan is officially recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. However, it does not currently have a leader, called a clan chief. Because of this, it is known as an armigerous clan. This means the clan has a coat of arms but no chief. The name Taylor is also linked to the Clan Cameron of the Scottish Highlands. Some Taylors are descendants of Taillear Dubh na Tuaighe, who lived around 1550. You can learn more about this connection in the Taylor sept article.

History of Clan Tailyour
Where the Clan Name Came From
The name Tailyour comes from the French word tailler. This word means to cut. In Latin, it is written as cissor. Around the year 1137, a person named Walter Cissor received some land. This land was given to him by David I of Scotland. A historian named George Fraser Black says that Taylor was a very common name in early Scottish records. In 1276, Alexander le Taillur was a special helper to Alexander III of Scotland.
Clan Tailyour and the Wars of Scottish Independence
The Wars of Scottish Independence were a series of military conflicts between Scotland and England. In 1296, Bryce le Taillur was captured at Dunbar Castle. He was one of many Scottish prisoners. In the same year, six people with the name Taillur signed the Ragman Rolls. This was a document where Scottish nobles promised loyalty to Edward I of England. These people came from different areas, like Angus and Roxburgh.
Clan Tailyour in Later Centuries
In 1462, two people named Donald Cissor and Bricius Cissor witnessed an important document. This happened in Inverness. Around 1552, Gillepatrick Tailzeour was a sergeant in Dornoch. The name is also sometimes written as Macintaylor. In 1613, several Macintaylors were fined. They had helped members of the Clan Gregor who were considered outlaws.
An important person named James Taylor was born in 1753. He was from Lanarkshire. James Taylor is famous for being the first to use steam power on boats. This was for travel on rivers and canals. His original work helped create the large paddle steamers. These boats later carried people and goods on rivers in North America.
Castles Connected to Clan Tailyour
Kirktonhill is located in Aberdeenshire. It is about four and a half miles north of Montrose, Angus. It is also directly east of the village of Marykirk. There was once a castle at Kirktonhill. The Taylor family owned this castle from the 18th century. They had earned money from sugar plantations in Jamaica.
The old castle was later replaced by Kirktonhill House. This was a large mansion. However, this mansion was torn down in the 1960s. Near this spot, you can find Kirktonhill Tower. This is a three-story building that is a "folly." A folly is a building built just for decoration, not for a practical purpose.
