Clarence Center is a small community in Erie County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is a named community that is part of a larger town.

In 2021, about 3,337 people lived in Clarence Center. It is part of the larger BuffaloNiagara Falls metropolitan area. Most of the local government buildings for the town of Clarence are found here. Clarence Center also has its own ZIP code, 14032, covering much of the northern part of the town.

History of Clarence Center

The community of Clarence Center started in 1823. Back then, it was known as Van Tines Corners.

Early Transportation and the "Peanut" Line

Clarence Center was the first place in the town to get a train line. This happened in 1853. The train line was nicknamed the "Peanut" line. The train station was called "Clarence Center."

Train service stopped on December 31, 1977. Today, most of the old train tracks are gone. They have been replaced by a fun cycling trail. This trail is also called the "Peanut" line, honoring the original train route.

Remembering Colgan Air Flight 3407

On February 12, 2009, a sad event happened in Clarence Center. A plane, Colgan Air Flight 3407, crashed at 10:20 PM. All 49 people on board, including passengers and crew, died. One person on the ground also died when the plane hit their house.

The plane was a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400. It was a new plane, delivered in 2008. After the crash, the area was closed off for about a week. This was to allow investigators to work and to keep people safe.

Clarence Center is located at 43°0′40″N 78°38′5″W / 43.01111°N 78.63472°W / 43.01111; -78.63472. It covers an area of about 2.1 square miles (5.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

As its name suggests, Clarence Center is located near the middle of the larger town of Clarence.

Community Life and Features

The main part of Clarence Center is where Clarence Center Road and Goodrich Road meet. People sometimes call this spot "the four corners" or just "the corners." There is usually a business on each corner. In recent years, these have included a coffee shop, a bank, a daycare center, and some gift shops.

Even though Clarence Center covers a large northern part of the town, the area called Clarence has more people living in it.

A special path for hiking and biking connects Clarence Center to other places. You can follow it east to Akron, New York. Or you can go west to NY Route 78, also known as Transit Road.

The J. Eshelman and Company Store is an old building at 6000 Goodrich Road. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is a historically important building.

Education in Clarence Center

Students in Clarence Center attend schools in the Clarence Central School District.

Clarence Center Elementary School is located east of "the four corners." This school serves most of the children living in the northern part of the town.

Some well-known people have connections to Clarence Center:

  • Neil Haskell is a dancer who grew up in Clarence Center. He was an original cast member of the famous Broadway musical Hamilton: An American Musical.
  • Marcel Dionne is a retired professional ice hockey player from the National Hockey League. He lives in Clarence Center.
