The Story of Clarksburg
Clarksburg started to be settled as early as the 1850s. This is when Merritt Island was first cleared for farming. The town got its first post office in 1876. It was first called "Clarksburgh" but changed to "Clarksburg" in 1893. The town was named after Robert C. Clark, who settled there in 1849.
In the 1920s, a company called New Holland Land Company helped officially create Clarksburg as a community. Many of the families who first settled in the area still live there today. This helps give the community a special small-town feel.
Clarksburg Today
Today, the community is centered around its two churches, the Holland Market, the volunteer fire department, three schools, and the public library. An old Sugar Mill, built in the 1930s, is now being developed. It closed in 1988. Part of the old Sugar Mill now has a modern place for wine tasting and making wine.
The Bogle Winery on Merritt Island is very famous. Their wines are sold all over the world. They were even served at the White House in 2007.
In 2008, Clarksburg had about 300 people. This number is an estimate because the exact borders of the community are not clearly defined.
Clarksburg has three schools: Delta Elementary Charter School, Clarksburg Middle School, and Delta High School. All these schools are part of the River Delta Unified School District.
Buildings with History
Architect William Raymond Yelland spent his summers in Clarksburg with his family. He designed several buildings in the town. These include homes, the Clarksburg Community Church, and the Sugar Mill. Yelland is well-known for his Arts and Crafts and Storybook Houses from the 1920s and 1930s.
Farming and Jobs in Clarksburg
Most of the jobs in Clarksburg are related to farming. The main crops grown in the area are wine grapes, dichondra grass seed, and tomatoes. Alfalfa is also grown, but it's not as important as it was before the 1920s.
Fun Events and Culture
The Paul Reese Memorial Clarksburg Country Run happens every November. It has been a tradition since 1965. This event includes a 20-mile (32-kilometer) race, a half-marathon, a 5k fun run, and special events for children.
The Friends of the Clarksburg Library hold a fundraiser every year called "The Wines of Clarksburg." This event helps support the local library. It often takes place at the old New Holland Land Company site. This is a great chance to see a historic building from the California Delta area.
