History of Clawson
Before it became a town, the area was known as North Flat. In 1896, a special canal was finished to bring water from Ferron Creek. This helped the area grow.
First Settlers and School
The first people came to settle here in 1897. They called their new community "Kingsville" after Guy King, who was one of the first settlers. The very first school opened in 1898 inside Guy King's home. Florence Barney was the teacher, and she rode about 14 miles on horseback every day to get to the school!

Moving the Town
In 1902, leaders from the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided to find a better, permanent spot for Kingsville. They looked at two places. They chose a spot near the Westingkow farm, about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the original settlement. They thought the old location might get too wet. Even though the settlers first disagreed, they decided to move. They bought the Westingkow farm and moved their log cabins to the new spot.
A New Name for the Town
On October 25, 1904, a Church leader named Rudger Clawson visited the town. He was an Apostle in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He helped organize a local church group, called a ward. To honor him, the town's name was changed from Kingsville to Clawson.
For many years, Clawson was an unincorporated community, meaning it didn't have its own official town government. But in 1981, Clawson officially became an incorporated town. This meant it could have its own local government.
