Clear Creek is a small community located in Carbon County, Utah, in the United States. It is a "census-designated place," which means it's a community that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own city government. You can find Clear Creek at the end of State Route 96, and it's also on a railway line called the Pleasant Valley Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad.
History of Clear Creek
Clear Creek started in the 1870s as a logging camp. People here cut down trees to provide lumber for a nearby mining town called Winter Quarters.
About 20 years later, something important was found under the town: coal! A mine was then built to dig out the coal. In 1898, a railway line was built from Scofield to the Clear Creek mine. This made it easier to transport the coal.
Two years later, a company called Utah Fuel Company built many things in the town. They built 25 homes, a hotel, a store, a hospital, a schoolhouse, a workshop, and even a water plant.
From 1910 to 1920, the mine was very busy. Workers were digging out about 2,000 tons of coal every day! During this time, Clear Creek had around 600 people living there.
However, by 1930, people didn't need as much coal anymore. By 1955, the mine produced much less coal, and the town's population dropped to about 150 people. According to the 2010 Census, only four people lived in the town.
Today, Clear Creek is mostly used as a place for fun and camps. Various schools and programs use it for outdoor activities. There are cabins, a place to shower, and an area for recreation and eating.
Clear Creek's Climate
Clear Creek has a type of weather called a warm-summer humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold, snowy winters. It's also very close to being a subarctic climate, which is even colder.
In the summer, the days are usually mild to warm. But even in summer, nights can get quite cool, sometimes dropping to around 30 or 40 degrees Fahrenheit (about 0 to 5 degrees Celsius). Winters are very cold and snowy. On average, Clear Creek gets about 237 inches (which is about 603 centimeters) of snow each year! Because Clear Creek is high up in the Wasatch Plateau mountains, it can even snow as late as June or as early as September.
