History of Cleveland, West Virginia
The community we know as Cleveland today has had three different names over time. These names changed because the local post office changed its name.
Early Names: Buffalo Fork and Point
The first post office in the area opened in 1853. It was named Buffalo Fork. This name came from a small stream nearby. This stream flows into the right fork of the Little Kanawha River.
About 30 years later, in 1883, the post office name changed again. It was then called Point. This shorter name was chosen to make postal services easier. However, the name Point did not last long.
How Cleveland Got Its Name
Just two years later, in 1885, the post office name changed for the third time. It became Cleveland. This name was chosen to honor Grover Cleveland. He had just started his first term as President of the United States.
