Clifton is a small town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. In 2020, about 675 people lived there. The town got its name from a mining company that used to operate in the area.
The Town of Clifton is in the southern part of St. Lawrence County. It is also located within the beautiful Adirondack Park.

History of Clifton
The first people to settle in Clifton arrived around 1866. They came to work at the Clifton Iron Mine. This mine built its first iron furnace in the same year.
The town of Clifton was officially created in 1868. It was formed from a part of the Town of Pierrepont. The very first town meeting was held in the office of the Clifton Iron Mine. Many early residents moved to Clifton specifically to work in the local mines.
Geography of Clifton
Clifton covers a total area of about 150.4 square miles (389.39 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 135.1 square miles (347.96 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 15.2 square miles (41.44 square kilometers), is water.
The southern edge of Clifton borders Hamilton and Herkimer counties.
The Oswegatchie River flows right through the town. A large Adirondack lake called Cranberry Lake takes up a big part of the eastern side of the town.
New York State Route 3 is a main highway that goes through Clifton from east to west.

- Bear Mountain – This is a high point located southeast of Cranberry Lake village.
- Benson Mines – This area in the southwestern part of town was one of the first settlements.
- Brown's Falls Reservoir – A reservoir found west of Newton Falls.
- Buck Island – A small island in Cranberry Lake, located southeast of Joe Indian Island.
- Clarksboro – This used to be a small village. You can still see parts of the old Clifton ore reduction mill at Twin Falls.
- Cooks Corners – A small village near the western town line, northwest of Cranberry Lake village. It's also known as the Windfall.
- Cranberry Lake – This is a hamlet, or small community, in the eastern part of the town. It sits on the north shore of Cranberry Lake. About 850 people live here. New York State Route 3 goes through this community.
- Cranberry Lake – This is a large lake on the east branch of the Oswegatchie River. It is the third biggest lake in the Adirondack Park.
- Dead Creek Flow – This is a part of Cranberry Lake located in the southwestern part of Clifton.
- Joe Indian Island – An island within Cranberry Lake.
- Lows Lake – The northwest part of this lake is in the southeastern corner of Clifton.
- Newton Falls – A hamlet located near the western part of the town on County Road 60.
- Newton Falls Reservoir – A reservoir located east of Newton Falls.
- Olmstead Pond – A lake located south of Cranberry Lake.
- Star Lake – This is a hamlet and a popular resort area. It's in the southwestern part of the town, along NY-3 and on the eastern shore of a lake also called Star Lake.
