Clinton is a city located in Sampson County, North Carolina, in the United States. It is the main town, also known as the county seat, of Sampson County. In 2020, about 8,383 people lived there. The city gets its name from Richard Clinton, who was a important general in the North Carolina army during the American Revolution.

History of Clinton

The first people to settle in the area that is now Clinton arrived around 1740. The community was first called Clinton Courthouse. In 1822, Clinton officially became a town. Back then, the town's borders stretched about half a mile in every direction from the courthouse.

In 1852, the state government passed laws to help manage towns better, including Clinton. Five leaders were chosen to help run the town: James Moseley, Isaac Boykin, Dr. Henry Bizzel, John Beaman, and Alfred Johnson. The first elections were held in February 1852, and the first tax rate was set at 50 cents for every $100 of property value. In July 1953, Clinton changed from a town to a city.

Clinton is right in the middle of Sampson County. Since Sampson County is mostly made up of farms, Clinton grew into a major place for selling farm products. A famous person named William R. King was born in Clinton. He later became the 13th Vice President of the United States under President Franklin Pierce. He was the only American executive official to be sworn into office in a foreign country, which happened in Havana, Cuba, in 1853.

Clinton also had a minor league baseball team from 1946 to 1950. This team was the last stop for a famous baseball pitcher named Van Lingle Mungo, who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Many important buildings and areas in Clinton are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special and protected because of their history. Some of these include the Bethune-Powell Buildings, the Gen. Thomas Boykin House, the Clinton Commercial Historic District, and the Clinton Depot.
