Communities in Newton

Newton is home to several smaller communities. These are places where people live, work, and gather.

  • Clover is a small, unincorporated community. It is found where Highway CR and Clover Road meet.
  • Duveneck used to be a community. It was located north of where two highways, I-43 and Highway CR, cross Highway C. Today, there are no buildings left in that area.
  • Newton is also an unincorporated community. It is split by I-43, and Highways U and CR cross it east of the I-43 Newton Road bridge. This community was once called Timothy or Newton Station. Its current name, Newton, comes from John Newton, who was an officer during the American Revolutionary War.
  • Newtonburg is another unincorporated community. You can find it where English Lake Road and Newtonburg Road meet. WIS 42 used to go through this community but now passes to its east. St. John's Lutheran Church is a key part of Newtonburg. It was founded in 1851, and its current building was built in 1922.
  • Northeim is an unincorporated community. It is located around the intersections of Highways U and LS.
  • Rube is an unincorporated community that is partly in Newton and partly in the nearby town of Liberty. It is specifically located at the intersection of English Lake and Range Line Roads.

Newton covers a total area of about 35.5 square miles (91.9 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 34.1 square miles (88.2 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 1.4 square miles (3.7 square kilometers) is water, like lakes or rivers.

Population and People

In the year 2000, a census counted 2,241 people living in Newton. There were 795 households, which are groups of people living together in one home. Out of these, 631 were families.

The town had about 65.8 people living in each square mile (25.4 people per square kilometer). There were 850 housing units, which are homes or apartments, in total.

Most of the people in Newton were White (98.71%). A small number were Native American, Asian, or from other backgrounds. About 0.54% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Historical Landmarks

Newton has some interesting historical sites.

The Lutze Housebarn is a special building in Newton. It is one of the very few housebarns left in the United States. A housebarn is a building where people and animals live under the same roof.

In 2021, a special area called the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary was created. It is located in the waters of Lake Michigan near Newton. This sanctuary helps protect old shipwrecks that are important parts of history.
