Cnidium cnidiifolium is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the parsley family, which is also known as Apiaceae. This plant has a few common names, like northern hemlock-parsley and Jakutsk snowparsley. The name "Jakutsk" comes from the Russian town Jakutsk.
This plant grows naturally in several cold regions. You can find it in Russia and Alaska. It also grows in Canada, specifically in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and British Columbia.
What It Looks Like
This plant has pretty flowers and interesting leaves. It can grow up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) tall.
Flowers and Fruits
The flowers of Cnidium cnidiifolium are light purple to white. They grow in clusters called umbels. An umbel looks like an umbrella, with many small flowers on stalks that come from one point. These flowers bloom from late June to August. Each flower cluster has five pointed leaves called bracts at its base. After the flowers, the plant produces oval-shaped fruits.
Stems and Leaves
The stems of this plant can reach up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) in height. They split near the base, which is called the caudex. The leaves are different depending on where they grow on the plant.
The lower leaves are smooth and have long stalks called petioles. They are also divided into many smaller leaflets, sometimes two or three times over. The upper leaves, however, are almost directly attached to the stem. This means they have very short or no stalks at all.
Where It Grows
Cnidium cnidiifolium likes wet places. You can often find it in damp areas like meadows. It also grows along the banks of rivers. Sometimes, it even grows on slopes that have a lot of gravel.
