Coco is a popular 2017 American computer-animated fantasy film. It was made by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The movie was directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina.

The story is about a 12-year-old boy named Miguel. He loves music, but his family has a strict rule against it. Miguel accidentally travels to the Land of the Dead. There, he meets his great-great-grandfather, who was a musician. Miguel needs his help to get back home and to bring music back into his family's life.

The idea for Coco came from the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos). The filmmakers visited Mexico to learn more about the culture. Michael Giacchino wrote the music for the film. Coco was special because it was one of the first big movies with an all-Latino main cast.

Coco first showed in Mexico in October 2017, just before the Day of the Dead. It came out in the United States in November 2017. People loved the movie for its amazing animation, voice acting, music, and emotional story. It also showed great respect for Mexican culture. The film earned over $807 million worldwide. It won many awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me").

Discovering Miguel's Family Story

The movie takes place in a town called Santa Cecilia, Mexico. Miguel dreams of becoming a famous musician like Ernesto de la Cruz. But his family has banned music for generations. This ban started because Miguel's great-great-grandmother, Imelda, was left by her husband. He was a musician who left to follow his music dreams and never came back. So, Imelda decided no one in her family would ever play music again. She started a successful shoemaking business.

Miguel lives with his elderly great-grandmother, Coco, and the rest of his family. Most of them are shoemakers. Coco is very old and has trouble remembering things. On the Day of the Dead, families honor their ancestors. Miguel finds a hidden part of a family photo on their ofrenda (a special altar). This hidden part shows his great-great-grandfather holding Ernesto de la Cruz's famous guitar. Miguel believes Ernesto is his ancestor and decides to enter a local talent show.

Journey to the Land of the Dead

Miguel's grandmother finds out about his music plans and destroys his guitar. Miguel then breaks into Ernesto's tomb and takes his guitar for the show. When he does this, something magical happens. He becomes invisible to living people. But he can now see and talk to his dead relatives, who are visiting from the Land of the Dead.

His skeletal family members take him back to the Land of the Dead. They realize Imelda cannot cross over to visit the living. This is because Miguel accidentally removed her photo from the ofrenda. Miguel learns he is cursed for taking something from the dead. He must return to the Land of the Living before sunrise, or he will become one of the dead forever. To return, he needs a blessing from a family member. Imelda offers him a blessing, but only if he promises never to play music again. Miguel refuses and decides to find Ernesto for his blessing instead.

Meeting Héctor and Uncovering the Truth

Miguel meets a friendly but tricky skeleton named Héctor. Héctor says he knows Ernesto and can help Miguel find him. In return, Miguel must help Héctor visit his daughter in the Land of the Living. If his daughter forgets him, Héctor will disappear forever. Miguel and Héctor try to get into Ernesto's mansion. They enter a talent competition, but Miguel's family soon finds him.

Miguel sneaks into the mansion anyway. Ernesto welcomes him, believing Miguel is his descendant. But then Héctor arrives and argues with Ernesto. Miguel soon learns a shocking truth. Ernesto did something terrible to Héctor long ago. He hurt Héctor badly to steal his songs and guitar. Ernesto then pretended Héctor's songs were his own to become famous. To keep his secret safe, Ernesto takes the photo of Héctor and throws Miguel and Héctor into a deep pit.

Family Secrets Revealed

In the pit, Miguel discovers that Héctor is his real great-great-grandfather. Héctor only wanted to visit the Land of the Living to see Coco again. Imelda and the family rescue Miguel and Héctor. Miguel tells Imelda what Ernesto did to Héctor. Imelda and Héctor slowly start to get along again.

The family then goes to Ernesto's concert to get Héctor's photo back. Ernesto's bad deeds are revealed to everyone. Imelda's spirit guide, Pepita, throws Ernesto out of the stadium. But in the chaos, Miguel loses Héctor's photo. Imelda and Héctor give Miguel their blessing without any conditions. This allows Miguel to return home by sunrise.

Music Brings the Family Together

Back home, Miguel plays "Remember Me" for Coco. This was a song Héctor wrote for her, which Ernesto later stole. Coco brightens up and sings along with Miguel. She then reveals that she had saved the torn-off piece of the family photo with Héctor's face on it. Coco tells her family stories about her father, Héctor. This saves Héctor from disappearing in the Land of the Dead. Miguel's family finally accepts his love for music, and the ban on music ends.

One year later, Miguel shows his new baby sister, Socorro, the family ofrenda. It now includes Héctor and a recently passed Coco. Using Coco's letters from Héctor, the family makes sure Héctor is honored. In the Land of the Dead, Héctor and Imelda are happy together. They even visit the living with Coco. Miguel performs music for his family, and everyone is joyful.
