Natalia Cordova-Buckley (born November 25, 1982) is a talented actress from Mexico and the United States. She is most famous for playing Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez, a super-fast hero, in the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She also voiced the famous artist Frida Kahlo in the Disney-Pixar movie Coco.
Early Life and Dreams
Natalia Cordova-Buckley was born in Mexico City and grew up in Cancún. Her grandfather, Pancho Córdova, was also an actor, but she never met him.
When she was young, Natalia trained to be a ballet dancer. She learned from a famous teacher named Fernando Alonso. But she felt that ballet was too strict and decided she wanted to be an actress instead. It was a big step because when she was a kid, she was teased about her voice. People said she screamed like Godzilla! But Natalia was always strong-willed and spoke her mind.
At 17, she moved to the U.S. to study acting. She went to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and later to the California Institute of the Arts.
Her Acting Journey
Natalia started her acting career in a Mexican TV show called Los simuladores in 2008. After that, she appeared in several Spanish movies. Her first main role in a film was in Ventanas al mar (2012).
Her first acting job in an American movie was in the sports drama McFarland, USA (2015), where she acted alongside Kevin Costner. She almost stopped acting before getting her big break as Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. This superhero show made her very well-known. Her character, Yo-Yo, is a super-fast agent who can run at incredible speeds and then snap back to her starting point.
During the show's fourth season, Natalia even starred in her own short online series called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot. This series was so good that it was nominated for an Emmy Award!
In 2017, she played a lawyer in the TV show Bates Motel. That same year, she lent her voice to the character of Frida Kahlo in the animated movie Coco. This movie was a huge hit and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In 2018, she also appeared in the crime movie Destroyer with Nicole Kidman.
Life Outside of Acting
Natalia Cordova-Buckley is married to musician and actor Brian Buckley. They got married in 2011 and live in Los Angeles with their two dogs.
One of Natalia's biggest inspirations is the artist Frida Kahlo. It was a dream come true for her to voice Frida in the movie Coco.
