Coffee Brook is a small stream, or tributary, that flows into Barnes Brook in Pennsylvania, USA. It runs through parts of Wyoming County and Sullivan County. This brook is about 1.1 miles (1.8 km) long. It mostly flows through forests and has a steep slope, meaning the water moves quickly. It's a bit tricky to reach Coffee Brook because there aren't many roads nearby, and much of the land around it is private.

Where Does Coffee Brook Flow?

Coffee Brook starts in a wet area called Crane Swamp. This swamp is located between Bartlett Mountain and Briskey Mountain in Wyoming County.

The Brook's Journey

  • First, the brook flows north-northwest for a short distance.
  • Then, it turns west and enters Sullivan County.
  • After that, it flows north-northwest again, moving into a valley.
  • Finally, it turns north-northeast and then north, where it meets Barnes Brook.

Coffee Brook joins Barnes Brook about 0.84 miles (1.35 km) before Barnes Brook itself ends.

The land around Coffee Brook is mostly covered by forests. The stream is known for its steep slope, which means the water flows downhill very quickly.

The total area of land that drains water into Coffee Brook, called its watershed, is about 0.86 square miles (2.2 km2). The mouth of the stream is near a town called Lovelton.

The area around Coffee Brook is mostly wild and forested. It's not easy for people to get to the stream. This is because there are no roads very close by, and much of the land is privately owned. In 2000, only about 4 people lived in each square kilometer of the watershed.

Plants in Crane Swamp

The very start of Coffee Brook is in Crane Swamp. This swamp is close to Pennsylvania State Game Lands Number 57, which are protected areas for wildlife.

  • In the late 1800s, many Spruce trees grew around the swamp.
  • However, in the early 1900s, a lot of trees were cut down in the area.
  • More recently, scientists have found hundreds of a special type of shrub in the swamp. This shrub is quite rare in Pennsylvania!

Coffee Brook was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System (a list of place names) on August 2, 1979.

Trying to Study the Stream

In 2001, scientists from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission wanted to visit Coffee Brook. They were studying the streams in the North Branch Mehoopany Creek area. However, they couldn't find a way to reach Coffee Brook. This was because there were many signs for private property, making it impossible to access the stream.
