Coffeen is a small city located in Montgomery County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 647 people lived there.
History of Coffeen
Coffeen got its name from one of the people who helped start the city, Gustavus Coffeen.
Geography of Coffeen
Coffeen is in the southeastern part of Montgomery County. It is located along Illinois Route 185, which is also known as Main Street. The city is about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Hillsboro, which is the main town for the county. It is also about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Vandalia.
The city of Coffeen covers a total area of about 1.16 square miles (3.01 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Coffeen is on high ground. Water from the city flows east into a small stream that connects to the East Fork of Shoal Creek. Water also flows west into Coffeen Lake. This lake is a reservoir on another part of the East Fork. The city is part of the larger Kaskaskia River watershed, which means all the water in this area eventually flows into the Kaskaskia River.
