History of Cohasset
Early Days and Name Changes
In the mid-1800s, people started lumber and farming businesses in Cohasset. Before that, the Maidu people lived in the area for many generations.
By the early 1900s, Cohasset was well-known for its excellent apples. Today, it's more famous for its peaceful country life, the yearly Cohasset Bazaar, and the beautiful Cohasset Ridge.
A post office opened in Cohasset in 1888 and operated until 1920. The early lumber workers named the ridge after the many pine trees there.
How Cohasset Got Its Name
A school district was created on July 16, 1878. It was called the North Point District. Soon, the whole ridge became known as North Point.
In 1887, people living on the ridge asked the United States Government to open a post office there, also to be named North Point. However, the Post Office Department said no. There were already too many places with "North" or "Point" in their names.
So, they asked for a new name. Two young women from the ridge, Miss Marie Wilson and Miss Electa Welch (who was the school teacher), were chosen to pick a new name. They picked "Cohasset." This name means "City of Pines" in the Algonquin Indian language. There was already a town called Cohasset, Massachusetts, which is a lovely town with pines and rocks by the sea. The new name was approved, and the first Cohasset, California post office opened on February 20, 1888.
