Discovering Colbert's Past: A Brief History
Colbert was first called the Town of Five Forks. This was in 1899. Later, in 1909, its name was officially changed to Colbert. The city was named after James Fletcher Colbert. He was one of the very first people to settle in the area.

Colbert is located in the southern part of Madison County. It sits along Georgia State Route 72. The city is about 12 miles northeast of Athens. It is also about 5 miles southwest of Comer. Danielsville, the county seat, is 7 miles north.

The city covers about 1.0 square mile of land. Only a tiny part, about 0.004 square miles, is water. Mill Shoal Creek flows south of the city. Brush Creek has smaller streams that flow north. Both of these creeks eventually lead to the South Fork of the Broad River. This river is part of the larger Savannah River system.

In 2010, there was a petition to invite comedian Stephen Colbert to the parade. However, the city decided not to invite him. They felt the parade was not the right place for his type of visit.
