Meauwataka: A Historic Community
Meauwataka is a small community within the township. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own separate local government. This community was first settled in 1867. It is located near Lake Meauwataka, which was originally known as Lake Dayhuff.
A post office, a place where mail is handled, opened in Meauwataka on May 2, 1872. Enos Dayduff was the very first postmaster, the person in charge of the post office. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing on April 30, 1952.
Soper: A Former Sawmill Town
Soper was another community that once existed in Colfax Township. It started as a settlement built around a sawmill. Sawmills are factories where logs are cut into lumber. A post office also briefly operated in Soper. It was open from March 23, 1900, until August 31, 1901.
