History of Conconully
The name Conconully comes from the Okanogan people. They called Salmon Creek "/qʷúnqʷunɬp/", which means "cloudy." This creek flows from Conconully to the Okanogan River.
Early Days as a Gold Camp
Conconully started as a camp for gold miners. It was first called Salmon City because of the nearby Salmon Creek. The town became important in the area's early days. From 1888 to 1914, it was the main government center, or county seat, for Okanogan County. Conconully officially became a town on November 11, 1908.
The Great Flood of 1894
On May 27, 1894, a very strong storm hit Conconully. Salmon Creek overflowed its banks. A huge wall of water, over 30 feet high, rushed through the canyons towards the town. One person saw the flood coming and quickly rode his horse through town. He warned everyone to get to safety. Sadly, more than 42 buildings were destroyed, and one person lost their life.
