Converse is a small town located in the state of Indiana, United States. It's unique because it sits in two different counties: Miami County and Grant County. In 2020, about 1,161 people called Converse home.

History of Converse

Converse was first established in 1849. Back then, it had a different name: "Xenia." The town was carefully planned out at that time.

Later, in 1867, a person named J. N. Converse added more land to the town. This new area was also carefully planned.

Two important buildings in Converse are recognized for their history. The Converse Depot and the Converse-Jackson Township Public Library are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special places that are protected because of their historical importance.

Geography and Location

Converse is found in the southeastern part of Miami County. It also stretches into the northwestern part of Grant County.

Roads and Travel

Two main roads, State Road 18 and State Road 19, go right through the middle of town. They are known as Marion Street in Converse. These roads split up a few miles outside of town.

  • State Road 19 goes northwest to Peru, which is about 18 miles away. Peru is the main town for Miami County. It also goes southeast to Swayzee, about 7 miles away.
  • State Road 18 goes east to Marion, about 12 miles away. Marion is the main town for Grant County. It also goes west to Galveston, about 17 miles away.

If you need to fly, the Converse Airport is just one mile west of town.

Waterways and Land

Converse covers an area of about 0.99 square miles (2.57 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny bit, about 0.002 square miles, is water.

Little Pipe Creek flows along the western edge of the town. Taylor Creek also crosses the eastern part of Converse. Both of these creeks flow north into Pipe Creek. Pipe Creek then flows northwest into the larger Wabash River.
