Cool McCool: The Super Spy Cartoon
This cartoon was inspired by popular superhero stories and James Bond spy movies of the time. Cool McCool follows the adventures of a cool, trench-coat-wearing spy. He tries to stop bad guys, but he's often a bit clumsy and funny, like the spy in the old TV show Get Smart.
Cool McCool's boss is called Number One. You never see his face, only his arms and a cigar behind his chair. Number One's secretary is Friday, who secretly likes Cool McCool.
Cool McCool has a few famous sayings: "Danger is my business!" and "When you're right, Number One, you're right." If he messes up, he always says, "That will never happen again, Number One!" (But it usually does!)
Meet the Characters
The voices for Cool McCool and his father, Harry, were done by Bob McFadden. Most of the other voices were by Chuck McCann. Carol Corbett voiced the female characters. Bob McFadden made Cool McCool sound like the famous comedian Jack Benny.
Secret, Inc. Team
- Cool McCool: He's a secret agent who takes big risks to save the world. He's very skilled, but he can also be clumsy and make funny mistakes. He drives a special car called the "Coolmobile." It can turn into a jet plane or even a submarine! He calls it by whistling. His mustache tingles when danger is near, and he can even use it as a phone to talk to Number One. After each mission, even if he succeeds, Cool often does something silly that makes Number One angry. This usually ends with Cool getting ejected from headquarters!
- Number One: He is Cool McCool's boss. When Cool does something silly, Number One presses buttons on his desk. Then, office furniture like a chair or a file cabinet comes to life and throws Cool out of the building! You only ever see Number One's arms and a cigar. His real name is a secret.
- Mr. Riggs: He is the technician at Secret Inc. He invents gadgets to help Cool McCool, but they often go wrong or hurt Cool instead. Even then, Number One usually blames Cool for the problem!
- Friday: She is Number One's secretary. She has a crush on Cool McCool and is often a bit clumsy herself.
- Breezy: He is Cool McCool's young helper. He often joins Cool on missions and helps him when he's in trouble. Breezy wears a trench coat like Cool and has hair covering his eyes. Unlike Cool, he doesn't make many mistakes.
Harry McCool and the Komedy Kops
Each show also had a short cartoon about Cool McCool's father, Harry McCool. These stories are like a flashback, happening many years before Cool's time. Harry is a police officer, and his adventures are like the old-fashioned Keystone Kops movies, full of silly chases and mix-ups. Harry works with his brothers, Dick and Tom.
- Harry McCool: He is Cool's father and the leader of the "Komedy Kops." He is the tallest and smartest of the three brothers. They ride around on a three-seater bicycle.
- Dick McCool: He is Harry and Tom's brother. He rides in the middle seat of their bike. He often gets confused by what Tom says and asks, "What did he say, Harry? What did he say?"
- Tom McCool: He is the shortest brother. He has a big black mustache and hair over his eyes. He rides in the back seat of the bicycle. Tom speaks in gibberish that only Harry seems to understand.
Cool McCool's Enemies
Cool McCool faces many different villains. Each villain usually works alone, except for Dr. Madcap and his wife, Greta Ghoul, who team up.
- The Owl: This villain looks like an owl and can control birds. He lives in a cave with pet owls. He is a funny version of the Penguin from Batman.
- The Rattler: He is a green, snake-like villain who loves art. He hisses and can talk to plants. He sometimes uses shotguns and bombs. He is a funny version of the Riddler.
- Dr. Madcap: He is a crazy villain who can control all hats and make them do his evil work. His hats sometimes hide dangerous surprises like anvils or guns. He loves his hats and his wife, Greta Ghoul. He is a funny version of the Mad Hatter from Batman.
- Greta Ghoul: She is Dr. Madcap's wife. She has light gray skin and is often moody. Her voice sounds like a vampire. She is based on the actress Greta Garbo.
- Hurricane Harry: He is a big villain who can create strong winds by blowing hard. His weakness is his buck tooth. If it gets knocked out, he deflates like a balloon!
- Jack-in-a-Box: This crazy crook wears a red and yellow jester outfit. He hides in a jack-in-the-box to scare people. He uses shotguns, grenades with laughing gas, and spring-loaded shoes. When he talks, his voice bounces like a spring. He is a funny version of the Joker.
