Corey Harris was born on February 21, 1969, in Denver, Colorado. He is an American musician who plays blues and reggae music. Today, he lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In the mid-1990s, Corey helped bring back acoustic guitar blues. He did this alongside other musicians like Keb' Mo' and Alvin Youngblood Hart. He was even featured in a TV show called The Blues in 2003. This show was directed by famous filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

Corey Harris's Early Life and Music Journey
Corey grew up near Denver, Colorado. He went to Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and graduated in 1991. Later, in 2007, the college gave him a special honorary degree.
Before starting his music career, Corey received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study languages in Cameroon, a country in Africa. After that, he taught in Napoleonville, Louisiana through a program called Teach For America.
First Albums and Awards
Corey's first solo album was Between Midnight and Day, released in 1995. A music producer named Larry Hoffman discovered Corey in 1994. This first album included his own songs and covers of famous blues artists.
His second album, Fish Ain't Bitin', came out in 1997. It won the W. C. Handy Award for Best Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. This album was recorded in New Orleans. It featured Corey's original songs, with his voice and guitar. Some songs also had a trio of tuba and trombones.
Musical Collaborations and Influences
Corey Harris has traveled and lived in West Africa. This experience has greatly influenced his music. He often blends blues with sounds from West Africa.
In 2002, Corey worked with the musician Ali Farka Toure on the album Mississippi to Mali. This project combined blues music with Toure's music from northern Mali. In 2003, Corey also contributed to a tribute album for Johnny Cash called Johnny's Blues: A Tribute To Johnny Cash.
Corey has toured all over the world. He has performed in Europe, Canada, West Africa, Japan, and Australia. He is known for his solo acoustic performances. He also plays with his electric band, which is now called The Corey Harris Band.
Corey also helped write music for songs on the Mermaid Avenue albums. These albums feature lyrics written by the famous folk singer Woody Guthrie. Corey appeared as a musician and singer on these albums, including Mermaid Avenue Vol. II and Mermaid Avenue Vol. III.
MacArthur Fellowship Award
In September 2007, Corey Harris received a very special award. He was named a MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. This award is given to talented people in many fields. It comes with a large amount of money to support their work.
