The Cortez angelfish (scientific name: Pomacanthus zonipectus) is a beautiful fish that lives in the ocean. It's a type of marine angelfish and belongs to a group of fish called Pomacanthidae. You can find these fish in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. Sometimes, people keep them in home aquariums because they are so pretty.

What Does the Cortez Angelfish Look Like?

The Cortez angelfish has a body that is tall and flat, like it's been squeezed from the sides. It has a short, rounded snout and a small mouth. Inside its mouth are many tiny teeth, like bristles.

How Young and Adult Angelfish Differ

One cool thing about this fish is that young angelfish look very different from adults!

Adult Angelfish Appearance

Adult Cortez angelfish have a special pattern on the back half of their bodies. It looks like crisscrossing lines. Their tail area is yellowish-green. They also have a big yellow curve behind their front fins and a bright yellow patch on the back of their neck. The middle of their body has a light gray section.

Young Angelfish Appearance

Young angelfish are mostly brownish-black. But they have six bright yellow stripes that go up and down their body, from their face all the way to their tail. Between these yellow stripes, there are blue stripes. The edges of their top fin and bottom fins are also bright blue.

Size of the Cortez Angelfish

These angelfish can grow to be about 46 centimeters (about 18 inches) long. That's almost as long as your forearm!

Where Do Cortez Angelfish Live?

You can find the Cortez angelfish in the eastern Pacific Ocean. They live along the coast from Puerto Peñasco in Mexico, all the way down to Peru. Sometimes, a few angelfish might swim further away. They have been seen near southern California, the Galapagos Islands, Cocos Island, and Malpelo Island.

Life and Habits of the Cortez Angelfish

The Cortez angelfish lives in the ocean at depths between 6 and 50 meters (about 20 to 164 feet).

Daily Life and Diet

These fish are active during the day. They spend their time looking for food on the ocean floor. Their favorite foods are sponges. But they also eat other things like tunicates, algae, tiny animals called bryozoans, and even fish eggs.

Social Behavior

Adult Cortez angelfish usually live in pairs. They swim around a large area together. Young angelfish, however, prefer to live alone. They are very protective of their own small space.

Reproduction and Young Fish

Cortez angelfish lay their eggs from mid-summer to early autumn. You can see the most young angelfish from August to November. It seems that adult angelfish stay with the same partner for a long time. Young angelfish can also be found in shallow areas near the shore, like tidal pools.

Cortez Angelfish in Aquariums

Sometimes, you might see the Cortez angelfish for sale in stores that sell fish for aquariums. People like to keep them because of their beautiful colors and patterns.
