Early Life and High School Football
Cory Boyd grew up in Orange, New Jersey. He played both high school football and basketball at Orange High School. His talent in football earned him a scholarship to play at the University of South Carolina.
College Football Career
At the University of South Carolina, Cory played for famous coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier. He was a very strong player for the Gamecocks. He gained 2,267 yards by running with the ball, which put him among the top 10 rushers in the school's history. He also gained 1,283 yards by catching passes. In his four seasons with the Gamecocks, Cory scored 28 touchdowns. He also played in the 2007 East-West Shrine Game, which is a special game for college players.
Professional Football Journey
Starting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Cory Boyd was picked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft. This was a big step for his career. However, he hurt his knee during a practice camp for new players. Because of this injury, he was placed on injured reserve for the 2008 season. The Buccaneers later released him in October 2008.
Time with the Denver Broncos
After leaving the Buccaneers, Cory joined the Denver Broncos' practice squad in November 2008. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but are not usually on the main roster. He was moved to the active roster in December when another player was injured. This meant he could play in games. However, the Broncos later waived him, then re-signed him to the practice squad. He was put back on the active roster for the last week of the 2008 season due to more injuries on the team. The Broncos released Cory in March 2009.
Playing in Canada: Toronto Argonauts
Cory Boyd then moved to Canada to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He signed with the Toronto Argonauts in March 2010. He quickly became a star player. In his first year in the CFL, he ran for 1,359 yards and caught passes for 363 yards, even though he missed some games due to injuries.
Cory received many awards that year. He was named the CFL's toughest player and the Argonauts' most outstanding player. He was also chosen for the CFL East All-Star Team. In 2011, he continued to play well, rushing for 1,141 yards and catching for 118 yards, despite missing more games. He was again named a running back for the CFL East All-Star Team. The Argonauts released Cory in August 2012, even though he was leading the CFL in rushing yards at that time.
Joining the Edmonton Eskimos
Just hours after being released by Toronto, Cory Boyd joined the Edmonton Eskimos. However, he had limited playing time with the Eskimos, gaining only 76 yards in 8 games. This was because the team had many other good running backs. The Eskimos released him in October 2012. He was re-signed later that month after another player got injured.
Life After Professional Football
After his professional football career, Cory Boyd became a football coach. He now coaches at South Carolina Faith Athletics & Music College in Charleston, South Carolina.
