Cory Boyd's Professional Football Journey
Playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Cory in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft. He was the 238th player chosen overall. Unfortunately, he hurt his knee during a mini-camp for new players. This injury meant he had to sit out the entire 2008 season. The Buccaneers released him on October 17, 2008.
Time with the Denver Broncos
Cory then joined the Denver Broncos' practice squad on November 4, 2008. This happened after another running back, P. J. Pope, moved to the main team. On December 9, Cory was promoted to the active roster. This was because fullback Peyton Hillis was injured.
However, the Broncos waived Cory six days later. They then re-signed him to their practice squad. He was put back on the active roster for Week 17 of the 2008 season. This was due to injuries to Selvin Young and P.J. Pope. The Broncos waived Cory again on March 31, 2009.
Success with the Toronto Argonauts
On March 12, 2010, Cory signed with the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. He extended his contract with them on March 21, 2011. In his first year in the CFL, he had a fantastic season. He rushed for 1,359 yards and gained 363 yards receiving. He achieved this even though he missed some games due to injuries.
Cory received many awards that year. He was named the CFL's toughest player. He was also the Argonauts' most outstanding player. He was selected for the CFL East All-Star Team. In 2011, Cory continued to play well. He rushed for 1,141 yards and had 118 yards receiving. Again, he missed some games due to injuries. For the second year in a row, he was named a running back for the CFL East All-Star Team.
The Toronto Argonauts released Cory on August 12, 2012. At the time, he was leading the CFL in rushing yards.
Joining the Edmonton Eskimos
Just hours after leaving Toronto, Cory joined the Edmonton Eskimos. However, his time there was short. On October 11, 2012, the Eskimos released him. Cory had limited playing time, gaining 76 yards in 8 games. This was because the Eskimos had many good running backs like Hugh Charles and Jerome Messam. He was re-signed on October 21 after Hugh Charles got injured.
Life After Professional Football
After retiring from playing, Cory Boyd became a football coach. He now coaches at South Carolina Faith Athletics & Music College in Charleston, South Carolina.
