The Corytophanes hernandesii is a cool type of lizard. People also call it Hernandez's helmeted basilisk. In Spanish, it's known as el turipache de montaña. This lizard belongs to the family called Corytophanidae. You can find these lizards living in Central America and the southern parts of Mexico.

About Hernandez's Helmeted Basilisk
This lizard gets its scientific name, hernandesii, from a Spanish scientist. His name was Francisco Hernández de Toledo. He lived a long time ago, from 1514 to 1587.
Where These Lizards Live
You can find C. hernandesii in several countries. They live in Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. In Mexico, they are found in many southern states. These include Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, and Yucatán.
Their Natural Home
These lizards love to live in forests. They can be found from areas right by the sea up to mountains. Their homes can be as high as 1,300 meters (about 4,265 feet) above sea level.
How They Behave
C. hernandesii lizards are diurnal. This means they are active during the daytime. They spend most of their time in trees. This is called being arboreal.
How They Reproduce
These lizards lay eggs. This way of having babies is called being oviparous.
